Technical Specifications ( Gemlab 1800°C Furnace Model 181-3B)

Furnace type

Bottom loading/vertical muffle with electro-mechanical elevator.

Max.oper.temp. (air)

1800° C in air (Accuracy +/- 0.1% plus 1 digit)

Loading capacity

Up to 3,700 CTS of ruby-sapphire in batch process. Multi-crucible configuration for testing up to 12 different types of rubies or sapphires without mixing each other, in the same run.

Loading method
The stones can be loaded/unloaded into/from the heating chambers from the top by simply removing the muffle flange. The stones can also be loaded/unloaded into/from the heating chambers from the battom using an electro-mechanical elevator. The rate of bottom loading/unloading can be fully controlled via UP/DOWN control buttons without removing the ceramic muffle.

Controls

Process indicator pilot lights, key-switch (ON/OFF), locking cabinet, emergency switch, buzzer-alarm, hour-meter, heater-breaker relay alarm, transformer thermostat, power in/out voltmeters & ammeters, all completely wired and packaged in an attractive floor standing 4-wheeled cabinet.

Power control

SCR (Silicon Control Rectifier) phase-angle controller with current limit.

Atmosphere control

Gas-tight, open-loop, two-gas mixing sys: flowmeters, precision pressure valves, backpressure meter, by-passing valves, safety one-way flow valves. The furnace can perform heating processes at 1800°C in oxygen, nitrogen, and mixtures of nitrogen/oxygen, carbon monoxide-carbon dioxide, hydrogen/nitrogen with/without chemical additives.

Muffle

Ceramic (99.99% alumina) muffle vertically positioned equipped with water cooled flange assembly.

Exhaust

Copper tubing with jar-trap and 150 micron gas filter.

Cooling

Self-contained, 2.5 gallon water recirculating module prevents melting the O-rings installed of the muffle's flanges.

Heat.elements

Molybdenum desilicide Kanthal S-1900 elements (4 pieces, element temperature is 1850oC, delivery temperature is 1800°C)

Temperature controllers

Main process: Eurotherm 818P or Shimaden FP-23 digital microprocessor temperature programmer-controller (9 steps/program, 9 linkable programs)

Over temperature: Single step digital microprocessor temperature limit controller. Furnace will shut down in the even of overtemperature in hot zone at user selectable temperature; Eurotherm E-92 or Omron.

Cooling: Single step OMRON digital microprocessor controller monitors the fans installed in the furnace for cooling the elements.

Temperature sensors

Three thermocouples: Type "20/40" (for E818P or for Shimaden FP-23); "S" type (for E-92 or Omron); "K" type (for Omron).
